Research and Evaluation Publications
The Office of Research and Evaluation (ORE) disseminates a number of publications, reports and bulletins that provide information and findings from research studies funded through the ODMH Research Grants Program. These research-related documents are distributed to consumers, family members, mental health professionals and other persons within Ohio and across the United States. In addition, ORE has staff members dedicated to conducting ground-breaking studies that reveal new patterns, problems, and potentials in community care. These research projects are typically longitudinal and collect information from consumers, service providers, and other community stakeholders. Research staff summarizes results from these studies and disseminates information in a variety of research publications that include papers, reports, and bulletins.
Most ORE publications are available online. However, a limited number of hard copies of older publications are available upon request to people living in the United States. If you live within the United States and would like a free hard copy of one or more of the publications that are available, please complete our Publication Request Form.
Research Grants Program Publications
New Research in Mental Health
New Research in Mental Health is published every two years by the Ohio Department of Mental Health. It contains reports of Department-funded research projects completed or in progress during the biennium, as well as abstracts of other projects that are funded by federal or other sources.
Toward Best Practices Booklets
This series of booklets grew out of the Department's desire to share key research results with Ohio's mental health community. Each booklet highlights major findings that can be used to improve practice and outcomes for consumers served in local mental health systems. In addition, each booklet contains one or more citations directing the reader to additional sources of information about the highlighted study.
Somali Psychological Distress Scale (SPDS)
This scale is a reliable, culturally appropriate screening tool that is designed for use with adult Somali refugees. The scale can be used in a number of settings, including community mental health centers, general medical clinics and community health centers. The scale can also be used in practices that gather information on a variety of conditions, including psychological distress, and can be incorporated as part of a broader survey of a Somali community. The SPDS is available in four forms: 35-item, 15-item, 11-item and five-item. The development and validation of the SPDS was part of a research study funded through the ODMH Research Grants Program.
ORE Research Reports
ORE Data Bulletins
Data Bulletins is a series of reports that characterizes the population being served in Ohio's public mental health system.
ORE Evaluation Reports
ORE staff evaluate various program and policy initiatives and produce evaluative reports that provide input into program and policy decisions.
Ohio Consumer Outcomes Reports
The Ohio Consumer Outcomes Support Team publishes data reports on a quarterly basis. These reports alternate between updated statewide benchmarks for each Outcomes instrument, and special topic reports.
Longitudinal Consumer Outcomes (LCO) Study
The Longitudinal Consumer Outcomes study is one of two studies of consumers with severe mental disabilities (SMD) spanning a period of eight years. Combined, these two studies have provided valuable information about the experiences of consumers served in Ohio's public mental health system.
Innovation Diffusion and Adoption Research Project (IDARP) Documents
IDARP is a collaborative endeavor involving the ODMH, Decision Support Services Inc. and The Ohio State University. Currently, the research team is analyzing results from 91 projects within 71 mental health provider organizations that participated in IDARP. To augment existing overview publications and presentations, the IDARP Bulletin series highlights interesting findings in a number of smaller, special topic areas.
Transformation State Incentive Grant (TSIG) Evaluation
ORE is evaluating the activities of the Transformation State Incentive Grant (TSIG) for the state and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The main purpose of the evaluation is to assess Ohio's progress in meeting the goals specified in both the TSIG proposal and the state's Comprehensive Mental Health Plan (CMHP).
